Hangin Tree Cowdogs

Hangin Tree Cowdogs are a unique breed that hails from the United States, specifically developed for their outstanding herding abilities. These intelligent and versatile dogs are a result of carefully planned breeding programs utilizing a combination of different breeds. Primarily, Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, and Catahoula Leopard Dogs have been used to create the Hangin Tree Cowdog we know today.

The breed’s history traces back to the late 1960s when Gary Ericsson, a renowned dog trainer and rancher from New Mexico, began his quest to develop the ultimate working dog. By selectively breeding exceptional herding dogs, Ericsson aimed to create a versatile and capable breed that would excel at herding livestock, particularly cattle.

The name “Hangin Tree” is derived from an old western term that refers to a lone tree that can be used as a temporary hitching post when working cattle. Ericsson chose this name for his breed, as it reflected the dog’s ability to handle cattle efficiently, even when working alone.

One of the defining qualities of Hangin Tree Cowdogs is their remarkable athleticism and endurance, which makes them excellent hiking companions. With a strong herding instinct and an agile physique, these dogs thoroughly enjoy outdoor adventures. Their ability to navigate through challenging terrains while maintaining a high level of focus and control makes them reliable partners for hiking enthusiasts.

Additionally, Hangin Tree Cowdogs possess a natural cautiousness that allows them to adapt quickly to various hiking environments. They are known to be alert and aware of their surroundings, making them capable of sensing any potential dangers or risks while out on the trails. Their inherent loyalty and protective nature also ensure a sense of security for their owners during outdoor excursions.

The breed’s intelligence further contributes to their suitability as hiking dogs. Hangin Tree Cowdogs have a keen ability to learn and follow commands, making them highly trainable for off-leash hiking experiences. Their biddable nature enables them to heed their owner’s instructions promptly, ensuring a safe and enjoyable hiking experience for both the dog and their human companion.

I regularly get asked where I got my Hangin Tree’s from. Timber is registered with the Hangin Tree Cowdog Association and I obtained her from Seth Allen in Central Idaho. You may find his website here: https://www.hangintreeomo.com/
