I recently went backpacking to Emerald Lake in Idaho, just outside of Council, and in the Southern part of the Seven Devils! The road leading to the trailhead was narrow and had some exposed sections, so make sure to drive carefully. The trail starts at Black Lake and quickly ascends to a saddle with breathtaking views of Emerald Lake. Along the way, you’ll come across a junction to the Six Lakes Basin, so be sure to stay on the right trail.
I’ve wanted to hike into this lake for years but the 4 hour, one way, drive from Boise has always kept it on pause.
Before reaching the pass, there is a small lake that may dry up later in the season, but early on, it offers a stunning display of wildflowers. Once you cross the saddle, the trail descends towards Emerald Lake. Be cautious as it can be steep and loose in some areas, with exposure to watch out for. However, once you enter the trees, the trail becomes more manageable and leads you to the serene and picturesque Emerald Lake. The lake is surrounded by beautiful meadows and offers plenty of secluded campsites.
After exploring Emerald Lake, be aware that the trail beyond is not regularly maintained and can vary in condition from year to year. From here, you’ll navigate through a forest and gradually ascend back into the alpine. Expect to encounter fallen trees along this section until you reach the alpine region again. Overall, it’s an incredible backpacking experience with stunning scenery and a sense of solitude.
“Hiking is not escapism; it’s realism. The people who choose to spend time outdoors are not running away from anything; we are returning to where we belong.” – Jennifer Pharr Davis
